Thin privilege is not having a doctor’s appointment trigger a relapse of your ED.(submitted by anon)
this doesn’t actually sound like thin privilege to me, considering thin people can also have EDs, and doctors appointments actually can trigger a thin person’s eating disorder…like they do with me…so…check ya self, thisisthinprivilege.
recently i’ve noticed that my body is very sensitive to the increased amount of soy products i’ve begun eating after making the switch from vegetarian to vegan. i relied on soy for almost everything—soy milk in my coffee, tofu as my main protein source, soy substitute cheeses, faux meats, etc.. after noticing my body’s sensitivity, i started avoiding soy products, too. this would have been fine for most people, but i have a history of anorexia. and it’s not just a history of anorexia, i still have the disorder, i just try my best to ignore it, but i am by no means recovered. so that left me avoiding two huge protein sources—dairy and soy—as well as fervently reading food labels, saying “oh, i can’t eat that” to many, many things because they contained minor amounts of egg or milk, and to tell the truth, it delighted the anoretic in me.
on the other side of things, i am acutely aware of the mutually beneficial relationship between the dairy industry and veal and the egg industry and poultry, of the mistreatment of animals in order to make dairy products or to get eggs and i am not okay with it. rather, i’m nauseated by it. i’ve shed tears over it and i often think about it, which is why i cannot stress enough that if it is something that is financially, situationally, and healthfully feasible for you, a vegan diet is absolutely the way to go. but for me, it is too much tied to my eating disorder and a sensitivity to soy for me to continue to eat this way.
i will continue to pay attention to where my food comes from. i’ll try to get the majority of my dairy from local vermont farmers, my eggs and cheese and yogurts, too. i’m lucky that i live in a state with a really good local food circuit. this will, in turn, regulate the amount of dairy and egg that i consume and keep it as a minor part of my diet.
and remember, if it works for you, go vegan, but if it just isn’t what’s best for you, do what is.
